A very fun read here. Thanks for this! I recall all of us taking a hike through Silver Falls by Silverton and Bernie mentioned that you are one to stop and read signs and plaques. Your research here shows that you do far more than merely read the plaques! Through my wandering in academia, I wandered into a field called “Environmental history.” You strike me as a natural environmental historian. A few founding authors in the field are, Aldo Leopoldo, of course. But lesser known is Roderick Nash with his influential book, “Wilderness and the American Mind.” You might already know about these figures. If not, it’s always nice to find our like-minded predecessors.

Yes, and not to overwhelm you with reading, but William Cronan is another influential thinker…but in sum, since these early writings, the field has been quite robust. It seems like a good time to be writing about these things. I’ve taken a stab at this sort of writing in that little piece on fly fishing, but I’m finding that I am more the memoirist and tend to go light of the solid historical work.
